CUMBERLAND – Shirley Jean McDonald, 74, of Bowman's Addition, Cumberland, passed away on January 28, 2022, at Devlin Manor Nursing Home.

She was born on August 27, 1947, in Cumberland, to the late Richard and Mary Francis McClelland. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin Leo McDonald; and a son, Aaron McClelland Spence.

She graduated from Fort Hill High School, and then went on to work as a nursing assistant at the Allegany County Nursing Home until she retired. Later, she co-owned, along with her daughter-in-law Donna Spence, and operated Spence-McDonald Daycare for children out of her home, and also took in many foster children for the state. She loved camping at Rocky Gap State Park and volunteered there with her grandsons. Also, she enjoyed reading and crocheting, was active with the Allegany County Nursing Home Retirees & Friends group and was a member of the Cumberland Bible Church. Shirley enjoyed having her family around the table for family dinners anytime she could schedule it.

Shirley is survived by her children, David Spence and wife, Donna, Carl Spence and wife, Julie, Lynn See and husband, Joe; God-daughter, Brandy Shoemaker; four stepchildren, Paul, Debbie, Randy and Steve; three sisters, Mary Louise McKenzie, Nancy Condry and husband, Will, Diane Smith and husband, Bill; grandchildren, David, Aaron, Cody, Shane, Autumn; great-grandchildren, Tucker, Raelyn, Jameson, CJ and Aubree; and an extended family including many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Avenue, Cumberland.

A funeral will take place at the funeral home on Thursday, February 3, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. with visitation one hour prior to service. Pastor Bill Miller will officiate.
Interment will be at the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Pressley Ridge, Attention: Development Department, 5500 Corporate Drive, Suite 400, Pittsburgh, PA 15237, and specify that the donation should go toward the Western Maryland division of the foster care program.
