Margaret Cole Chappell, 79, died peacefully on Tuesday, February 8, 2022.
Born in Richmond on August 14, 1942, Margaret was a beloved mother, daughter, sister and friend. She was a member of the class of 1960 at Douglas Freeman High School and the class of 1964 at Mary Baldwin College. She was valedictorian of both classes.
Throughout her life, Margaret loved learning and teaching. After college, she taught high school English at J.R Tucker High School and business English for J. Sargent Reynolds Community College. She was an active member at First Presbyterian Church, where she led Sunday school classes, then attended Reveille Methodist Church and Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock, VA. She was also active in the Tuckahoe Women's Club and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Margaret had an infectious laugh and a wonderful sense of humor. She was a voracious reader but a modest bridge player, always studying to get better at the game she so enjoyed playing with friends. She was an excellent listener and a loyal friend. Most of all, Margaret cherished her role as a mom, and loved children of all ages.
Margaret is survived by her husband Bates Chappell, her children, Mary Margaret Chappell, and Bill Chappell, her daughter-in-law Millay Chappell, and her two granddaughters, Finley and Sadie Chappell. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Ramage, and her nieces and nephews, Cole Handy, Holly Davis, Ann Ramage, Ty Chappell, Sam Ramage, and Beth Schwarz.
A memorial service will be held at Reveille Methodist Church at 1:30 pm on Monday, February 14. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests charitable contributions be made to The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
