Mary, age 90, died peacefully on a Tuesday, at St. Marys Hospital after a brief illness. She was the daughter of Edward and Nellie (Patterson) Fleming. Mary graduated from Reedsburg High School in 1931 and moved to Madison where she met and married Wilfred C. Kinney on Monday, July 22, 1935. Together they ran the family farm and raised five children: Bill Kinney, Eleanor Cronin, Dan Kinney, Kay Kinney, and Gina Barden. Mary was involved with many organizations over the years. She was a member of Dane County Homemakers, Fitchburg Center Mother's Club, Fitchburg Senior Center, Swan Creek Sewing Circle, Dane County Shamrock Club, Catholic Daughters of America, a longtime member of Holy Mother of Consolation Catholic Church and its Altar Society, and a former board member and officer of the Fitchburg Historical Society. Mary also was a founder of the Fitchburg Fireflies 4-H Club, where she was a leader in cooking, sewing, knitting and crocheting. In her later years she also taught knitting and crocheting for Madison Area Technical College. Mary loved to travel and lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed many trips around the United States and Europe, especially Ireland. But mostly she loved being with family. She was a loving grandmother to 16 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mary is further survived by a brother, Ivan Fleming; three sisters-in-law, Agnes Fleming, Ann Fleming, and Regina (Kinney) McInerney; and many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Willie; infant twin daughters; an infant grandson; four brothers, Edwin, Clarence, Art and Merwin Fleming; and two sisters, Ruth Richardson and Loretta Geiger. Burial was on Saturday, January 3, 2004.
