Teresa Berry
October 7, 1951 - January 24, 2022
Atwater, California - Teresa Anne Berry was born October 7, 1951 in Hawkins, TX and later moved to Amarillo, TX, where she attended elementary school. In 1961, she moved with her family to Atwater, CA graduating from Atwater High School in the class of 1970. Teresa attended San Francisco State University, graduating with a B.A. degree in Social Welfare. She returned to Texas and briefly worked in social services before starting a career at IBM in Texas and in California that lasted twenty-one years. While at IBM, Teresa received many recognitions and honors for her work as a Software Technician. After retiring from IBM, Teresa returned to Atwater and worked several years for California State University, Stanislaus as an Administrative Assistant before full-time retirement.
From an early age, Teresa had a passion for the performing arts and showed gifts for singing while in children's choirs. As an adult, Teresa continued singing in the choir and often performed as a church soloist. Later, Teresa used her vocal and acting skills to perform cabaret in San Francisco (Purple Onion), and other venues in Modesto and Merced. Her engaging personality and outstanding talents led to starring roles in Sister Act, Hairspray, Company, 42nd Street, Ruthless, Nunsense II and Gypsy.
In recent years and until her death, Teresa devoted time and energy to the Atwater United Methodist Church, where she served as a member of the choir, led hymns, sang on special occasions, and found joy in serving above and beyond her duty as an administrative assistant in the church office.
While at her home on January 24, 2022, Teresa quietly, unexpectedly, but gently passed into the loving arms of Jesus.
She is survived by the mother she adored, Josephine Berry, cousins she loved, and many faithful friends who will miss her sparkling smile, joyful spirit, and compassionate heart. Teresa will be welcomed with open arms by a host of loving family members who preceded her in death.
A celebration of Teresa's life will be held on February 17, 2022, 11:00 am, at Atwater United Methodist Church, 2550 Linden Street, Atwater, CA.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent in Teresa's name to the Scholarship Fund of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Atwater/Merced Chapter, or to Playhouse Merced
