Although private about his service to his country, William was a member of the 1155th Tech Ops Squadron. He enlisted on 3 October 1961, shortly after the Bay of Pigs and just a year prior to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was the recipient of the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal. He also attended the 34 week Special Weapons Maintenance Tech School in 1962 at the Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado.
