James Larry McKinney Sr., 73, of Hickory, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at his home.
James was born December 4, 1948 in Mitchell County, NC, to the late Paul McKinney and Zelda Deyton McKinney. He was the pastor of Mercy Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. James was humble and kind and faith and family mattered most to James.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother Bill McKinney and sister Betty Letterman.
He is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, June Miller McKinney; brother, Dick McKinney; sisters, Elizabeth Peterson, Mary Gardner, Judy Miller, and Janice McKinney; sons, James McKinney Jr., and Benjamin McKinney and wife Brandy; daughter, Michelle McKinney Fox; and grandchildren, Jesse McKinney, Malachi Fox, Jacob Fox, Sarah Fox, Isaac Fox, Savannah McKinney Abee, Gabriel McKinney, and Tristan McKinney. Also surviving are his bonus grandchildren, Will McKinney, Dallas McKinney, and Wesley Ward.
A funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 13, 2022 at 6:00 PM in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service with Dr. Keith Letterman officiating. Military honors will be provided by the US Navy and the Caldwell County Honor Guard.
