His actual first name was John. He was a Unionist civilian imprisoned in Richmond, presumably for his political beliefs. He died on 18 June 1862 while being held, and was buried just outside of Shockoe Hill Cemetery near downtown Richmond, in the same burial pit with about a hundred other Unionists, and with about 500 Union Army prisoners of war. His name was mis-recorded in Cemetery records as "Joseph Adkins".

His remains were disinterred with the others in 1866-67 and re-buried at Richmond National Cemetery under "Unknown" markers. See his memorial there as John Adkins

A commemorative marker with his name, and that of 87 other of the POWs and Unionists whose names happened to be recorded, is at Shockoe Hill Cemetery. His misstated name appears as it was recorded at the time.
