George J. DeLisle joined the US Navy in August 1936 at age 20 where he was trained in radio communications. George was assigned to the USS Philadelphia and later arrived at Pearl Harbor on the USS Idaho. George held the rank of Aviation Radioman (ARM), whose plane was shot down during a reconnaissance mission during the Battle of Midway. He was the only survivor having been rescued after 13 days alone in a raft. He was awarded the USN Air Medal for services during the battle of Wake Island in 1944. He left the Navy with the rank of Aviation Radioman 1st Class in 1947. George married Lore Haltmeier in 1942 and resided in Melbourne, FL after his service. There he opened a successful hardware store. Upon Lore's death in 1970 from cancer, he married Helen Thompson in 1971.
