John "Jack" J. Rice, November 5, 1942 - February 6, 2022, lived an extraordinary life.
He was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1942. As the son of a naval officer, he traveled extensively in his childhood and adolescence and lived in many places including Hawaii, California, Washington, and Virginia. It was during these travels that his father took him on many hunting and fishing trips that fostered a lifelong love of the outdoors. One of the most memorable being a pilgrimage to Alaska, where he and his father lived off the wilderness for several months. They had many encounters with grizzly bears, moose, and caribou near Wonder Lake in what is now Denali National Park.
A passion for learning and education were the cornerstones of his life. Jack graduated from the University of Richmond with a BA in Sociology and belonged to the Scabbard and Blade, a Military Honor Society. He also graduated from the College of William and Mary with an MBA and a Law degree. In addition to these academic achievements, he also served in the US Army in Korea for two years and afterwards in the US Army Reserves, rising to the rank of Captain.
He practiced law for 41 years in Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, and Southside Hampton Roads, acting as a true counselor to his clients. He also was an Associate Professor at Hampton University for 33 years, where he taught business law and was affectionately known as "Attorney Rice". He had a positive influence upon hundreds of young men and women, and due to his encouragement, many of them went on to pursue careers in law and business. Jack was well known for his wit and sense of humor by his legal and academic colleagues. He also faced many health challenges with determination and grit.
It was at William and Mary that Jack met the love of his life, Linda. They lived in the Williamsburg area for over 50 years and celebrated their 50th anniversary in August of 2019. His sanctuary was their horse farm Woodfield, where he found peace and enjoyed riding his treasured Tennessee Walker, Delight and playing with his Labrador and Golden Retrievers.
He is preceded in death by his father and hero, Eddy Rice and mother, Dolores Anne Rice.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Linda; his two beloved sons, John Christopher (Meghan) of Roswell, Georgia and James of Toano, VA. He is also survived by his grandson, Sam, who is the apple of his eye; and by his brother, Eddy Paul Rice of Richmond, VA; along with extended family and many dear friends. He will be remembered for his wisdom, integrity, tenacious spirit, generosity and kind heart, along with his lifelong commitment to justice and equality.
A private service will be held at the William and Mary Memorial Garden.
