George was the youngest of four children, a daughter and three sons. His middle initial is consistently shown as "W.," which probably stood for "Washington," a favorite boy's name in that era.

Tragically, George's father, Samuel "Adgedent," died about the time of his birth, leaving his mother Jerusha a 24-year-old widow. Nothing is known of his childhood.

George enlisted in the Marine Corps and served from May 1827 through July 1830 at the Marine Corps Barracks in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

After his discharge, George followed his brother Samuel to Carroll County, New Hampshire, where he soon married Lydia Dore. Lydia was probably a younger daughter of Beniah Dore and Eunice White, and therefore sister to Samuel's wife Jerusha. Lydia bore eight known children in the next twenty years, five sons and three daughters.

In the 1840 U.S. Census, George's family lived in Ossipee, Carroll County. About 1845, they moved about 45 miles southeast, to Kennebunk, York County, Maine. George worked as a laborer. The family is found in Kennebunk in the 1850 and 1860 U.S. Census.

Apparently, George, age 57, lied about his age and enlisted in I Company, 27th Maine Infantry Regiment in September 1862. The unit was discharged in July 1863 and George returned home.

George died probably in York County, Maine, before March 1867. His burial location is not known. In that month, Lydia applied for a government pension as the widow of a Civil War soldier.
