Part of the James Gang. Was killed by a fellow member, Dick Liddil, during an altercation at breakfast at the home of Martha (Ford) Bolton, east of Richmond. The Ford brothers, Bob, Charlie, & Cap or Wilbur, buried him secretly a mile away from the house on the farm land. With the help of Martha's 13 year-old son, authorities discovered his body, in April 1882.

His name within the gang was "Robert 'Bob' Gregg". As a son of George & Nancy (James) Hite, he was a first cousin to Jesse James. He fought for the Confederacy as a guerilla. He participated in at least 2 robberies with the James Gang. He had murdered John Tabor in Logan County and had escaped jail, returning to Missouri in August 1881.Wood Hite was a first cousin to Frank and Jesse James, and joined their gang after the unsuccessful Northfield, Minnesota, bank raid in 1876. Sent to jail for murder in 1881, he escaped by bribing a guard. In December of that year, Hite died in a shootout with fellow James Gang members Dick Liddil and Bob Ford. Ford and his brother Charley buried Hite in an unmarked grave.
