L. Howard Hartman

DANSVILLE - L. Howard Hartman, age 86, of Sylor Street, Dansville, died Friday, Oct. 9, 1998 at Noyes Memorial Hospital. He was born in West Sparta, Sept. 4, 1912, the son of the late Elmer J. and Mabel Frost Hartman. Mr. Hartman was married in Dansville Sept. 16, 1933 to Helen Forsythe Hartman, who died April 6, 1970, and married Eleanor Dye Collister Hartman April 10, 1971, who survives. Howard was a well known journeyman meatcutter for over 53 years in Dansville, having first worked for the A&P Tea Co. and then as a partner with Vincent Whiteman as well as owning his own meat processing plant and working for Smith's Market.

Mr. Hartman was a 60-year member and elder of the Dansville Presbyterian Church, a 65-year member of the Dansville Grange, a member of the Daniel Goho American Legion Post, past member of the Dansville Rotary Club, a trustee of Greenmount Cemetery, member of the Dansville Board of Trade and a former Town of North Dansville Board of Assessment Review member. Howard's most distinguished membership was as a 55-year member of the Phoenix Masonic Lodge where he served as master and district deputy of Livingston County. A member of the Dansville Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Corning Consistory Scottish Rite Masons.

Besides his wife Eleanor, he is survived by one daughter, Shirley (Richard) Tracy of Dansville; two sons, Lawrence (Alexandra) Hartman and Dennis (Donna) Hartman of Dansville; one brother, Harold of West Sparta; and one sister, Mildred Pike of West Sparta. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Friday 7-9 and Saturday 1-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Chamberlin Funeral Home Inc., 73 Main St. Dansville. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Dansville Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Robert Booher officiating. Burial will take place in Greenmount Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dansville Ambulance, P.O. Box 235, Dansville, or the Greenmount Cemetery, c/o Gerry Derrenbacher, Morse St., Dansville 14437.
