Thelma Thomas was born on August 01, 1928, in Sumter, South Carolina. She was the second of five children born to the late Carrie and Ellison Jackson. Thelma, affectionately known as "Nanny" or "Robbie", moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the age of eleven from South Carolina. She was educated in the Philadelphia school system and later received her Associates degree in Nutrition Sciences. It was during her years in Philadelphia that she met and married the love of her life Charles H. Thomas, who has proceeded her in death. Charles and Thelma shared four daughters, Norma Jean, Deborah, Linda, and Jacqueline. In later years, she was fortunate to have a bonus daughter in Yvonne Brown who also proceeded her in death.

As an adult, Thelma worked for over a decade and later retired from Temple University Hospital. While as an employee of the hospital, she was involved in activities related to her field and was held in high esteem by her colleagues. After retiring from Temple University Hospital, she worked as an elementary school aide for the Philadelphia Public School District and as a private Home Health Aide.

Thelma and her late husband Charles enjoyed gardening flowers, vegetables, grapes, and had apple and peach trees. The couple loved traveling and exploring different cities, cultural activities, and visiting world fairs. Up until Charles passing, the couple took a yearly trip to Atlantic City. As a family, Thelma, Charles, and their four daughters would travel to Wildwood, New Jersey for their annual family beach vacation; a tradition that lived on every year for Thelma, their daughters, and their families right up until the COVID-19 pandemic started in 2019.

Having lived much of her life in Philadelphia, she was an active member of the community. Thelma was an active member of Bright Hope Baptist Church where she served as member of its hospitality club. Later, she left Bright Hope Baptist to find a new church home at Mount Tabor Baptist where she was a part of the gospel choir for many years. While living on the 3100 block of Park Avenue, she served for over 40 years as the treasurer and trip coordinator for neighborhood association. She helped to arrange several trips for the entire neighborhood to Lancaster County (Pennsylvania Dutch country), Bush Gardens Williamsburg, Atlantic City and Wildwood New Jersey.

The organization that was closest to her heart was with Deborah Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Stars. While with the Order of Eastern Stars, she was a member of Mable M. Keyes Unit #99 where she served as a Worthy Matron, as a District 1 Mother advisor and as well as a Grandmother advisor to several generations of young adults in the Ruth Mitchell Tucker Girls Youth Department. She was also a member of two additional clubs -- Pyramid Court #17 and Isabella Clarkson Royal Court #31.

In 2007, she moved to Jacksonville, Florida with her daughter, Jacqueline Love. In sunny Florida, Thelma joined the Foster Grandparent program as a Foster Grandmother and was affectionately known as granny Thomas. She also maintained her joy of gardening with her many flowers and plants.

Thelma is survived by her four daughters, Norma Jean, Deborah, Linda, and Jacqueline. She also leaves to mourn her older brother, Louis Jackson, and her sister Rosalee Jackson as well as 13 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, and 27 great-great grandchildren.

Also, a special thank you to Jason Taylor, Kendall Robinson, and Alishia Love-Dinkens for taking care of her like she was their grandmother and not just a grandmother-in-law. They showed her nothing but love and dedication to their families by caring for her during her time of need.

Relatives and friends are invited to Thelma's Life Celebration on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 from 9:00-10:00 a.m. followed by her homegoing service at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Temple Church, 2240 N. 29th st. Philadelphia, PA 19132. Interment will follow at Rolling Green Memorial Park in West Chester.
