Jeanne Lynn Martin, passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 30th, 2021 at her home in Kearneysville, WV. She was 82 years old.
Jeanne was born in Prince William County, Virginia October 23rd, 1938 to Ruby Lynn Hornsby and Major Richard Hornsby, USMC. At age 6, Jeanne went to live with a loving older couple, Elvan Keys and his wife Myrtle (Aunt Myrnie), who had adopted Jeanne's mother when orphaned in 1918. Jeanne said that having her raised by Elvan and Myrnie was the most loving thing that God (and her parents) could have done for her. Jeanne grew up in Dumfries, VA., in the Keys Boarding House outside of the Quantico Marine base. She attended Garfield High School, followed by The American University in Washington, DC. She married Chester C. Martin in 1960, and they created and shared a lifetime of memories, until he passed away on February 20, 2016. They had two children, Sam and Amy, and a host of 4-legged family members, to include their beloved dog "Buddy".
Jeanne leaves to cherish her memories: her son, Sam Martin of Anchorage, Alaska and daughter, Amy Martin of Kearneysville, WV; two sisters, GiGi Johnson of Annapolis, MD and Sharon (Suzie Q) Higginbotham of Jacksonville, FL; many cousins from Philadelphia, PA to Jacksonville, FL; long-time family friend Jeff McGlothlin; her God-daughter, Grace Gilmour-Hansen; her extended Christian family, which includes the members of Aglow, Bethel Church, First Presbyterian of Martinsburg, God Won Ministries, Kingdom Church and many special sisters and brothers in the Lord.
Jeanne was best known for her faith, hospitality, love of animals, and story-telling. Jeanne was a pre-school and elementary school teacher for years. Young children always had a special place in her heart, and she always prayed for God to show her the gifts he placed in these little ones. With that information, she prayed over their lives, that the plan and purposes of God would come to fruition in their lives.
Jeanne's stories were all true, about the people she knew or knew through others. She honored peoples' lives with her stories. She said that she wanted her stories to either be sensitive enough to make you cry or funny enough to make you laugh. She loved to laugh and said that if you told her something funny, she was compelled to repeat it...though she may change names to not betray any confidences. She enjoyed weddings and could describe, in detail, the dresses and floral arrangements. She loved sharing meals around the kitchen table, recounting funny stories or reading the Bible, praying and she loved to know what God was doing in people's lives. It excited her. Jeanne loved the revivalist, Oswald Chambers, and would recommend his book, My Utmost for His Most High, alongside the Bible, to anyone wanting to know Jesus more.
For many years, she opened her home to ministry, prayer, worship and uplifting the name of the Lord Jesus. She felt it was important for people to come to know The Holy Spirit, that He might reveal more of Jesus to us. She loved old hymns from her Methodist Church Hymnal, Messianic worship, Gospel music, Contemporary worship, Irish music and just having a good time in the Lord. She enjoyed murder mystery dinner theatres, Christian plays (Sight & Sound), The Nutcracker, and Christian comedy and would often gather friends to attend these outings with her. Parties and gatherings were always just a date and an occasion away.
She attended God Won Ministries and 1st Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Martinsburg, WV. She also was a member and attended Bethel United Methodist Church in Stumptown, VA for many years. She would always welcome a friend or acquaintance to her home, offering at least a beverage, if not a full meal and a funny story of an event in her life or of others. She was always generous with family and friends and the church, giving her time and wonderful cooking skills to further His Kingdom. And she let every person she met know that they had a Seat at His Table and were important to God.
There will be a Memorial Service and Celebration of Life at a later date, to be announced. All will be welcomed to attend.
