ASA GREER

ASA GREER, son of Aquilla Greer, Sr., and Elizabeth Lowe, born circa 1758 in Halifax County Virginia, died March 1828 in what was then Clarke County, Georgia, but Oconee County today. He married Mary Ann Lowe circa 1783 in Virginia. Mary Ann was the daughter of Asa Samuel "Travis" Lowe and Nancy Ann Haynes.

IN the 1790's and early 1800's, Asa and his family, along with his father, Aquilla, and brother, William and several of the other Greer's and allied families were residing just to the south in Greene County in the vicinity of Fishing Creek near the Oglethorpe County line about 3 miles northwest of Penfield and about 6-7 miles west of Asa's brother's, Lt. James Henry Greer's, Plantation that lies just northeast of Penfield, Georgia.

CLARKE County was created in Dec. 5, 1801 and spanned the Oconee River, the county seat being in the southwestern portion at Watkinsville. Athens was to the northeast and at the time a small outpost designated as a future site for the University of Georgia.

LATER as Clarke County grew the county seat was moved east across the river to Athens in November 24, 1871. After a long dispute with the residents in the western portion the county, the state legislature on February 12, 1875, split Clarke County in two at the Oconee River and created Oconee County and reestablishing Watkinsville as the county seat.

ASA GREER according to Census and Tax Records was shown to be residing near Barber's Creek during these early periods of Clarke County, and as reported in THE ATHENIAN NEWS, Tuesday, November 24, 1829, page 3, col. 4, the following notice:

NOTICE To the Heirs of Asahel Greer.
You are herby notified in obedience to a writ issued from Superior Court of Clark county, we shall proceed to assign the dower of Mary Ann Greer, widow of said Asahel, in and to two Hundred and Sevety-seven Acres of Land and appurtenances on Barber's Creek in said county, on the 16th day of January next, and on the Land aforesaid.

Edward Connor.

ONE of the noted administrators signing was Parmenas Haynes, his brother-in-law, husband his of sister, Delia Greer Haynes
