Ruth Ann Hanley
School van driver, seamstress, volunteer
Ruth Ann (Huttenstine) Hanley, 79, of Hobbie passed away on Monday, Jan. 31, 2022, at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
Born in Hobbie on Oct. 22, 1942, she was a daughter of the late Ralph B. and Marian (Engler) Huttenstine. Ruth Ann was born and raised on the family dairy farm. As a child, she could be found milking cows with her father and peddling milk along his route. Ruth Ann graduated from Nescopeck High School in 1960. Following graduation, she worked at Clewell's Dairy in Berwick, then Berwick Industries, and retired from Central Tax Bureau. After retirement, she started driving a school van for children in the Berwick School District. From her childhood to her great-grandma years, Ruth Ann worked endlessly helping at the farm mowing grass, unloading hay and helping with the cattle.
In her spare time, Ruth Ann loved working as a seamstress and cooking for her family. Well-known in her community, Ruth Ann did alterations and made outfits, prom dresses, wedding dresses, and costumes for others, especially for her grandchildren. Ruth Ann was a wonderful cook who insisted on homemade Sunday meals for the family and feeding anyone who came by the farm.
Ruth Ann was an active member of the St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hobbie. She passionately volunteered for events in her church, served on the church council, and was active in her community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Francis X. Hanley, on March 21, 2021; her daughter, Carolyn Smith; and sister, Marion Huttenstine.
She will be greatly missed by her son, Martin Smith, and companion, Anna Marie Fyke; grandchildren: Benjamin Smith and wife, Tiffani, Hobbie; Neil Smith and wife, Brynne, Nescopeck; Brittany Gobin and husband, Ethan, Doylestown; Michelle Richburg and husband, Jake, Alabama; beloved grandson, Casey Smith, at home; great-grandchildren: Joelle Smith and Addison and Noah Richburg; sister-in-law, Mary Anderson.
She is also survived by stepdaughters: Alice Hanley and Kate Pitula; stepson, Frank Hanley; grandchildren: Nicole, Shannon, Ryan, Kyle, Kerry, Elisa, Jesse and Tara; and many great-grandchildren.
At Ruth Ann's request there will be no services. A celebration of life will be held at the convenience of the family.
