Richard Paul Dubrule
October 23, 1931 - January 23, 2022

Escondido --- With his family by his side, Richard Paul Dubrule, peacefully passed away of congenital heart disease at his home last Sunday evening.

Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he is the son of Roland and Lillian Dubrule. With his father's passing at an early age, his mother worked as a telephone operator earning a nominal income while raising four children on her own. At age 18, Richard joined the military serving as Airman First Class in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Shot down over enemy lines, he suffered severe bodily injuries, a coma, and a yearlong intensive recovery period. Awarded multiple medals and citations, he is credited for his bravery and successful efforts in saving a South Korean village. In June 1954, he married Harriet Dodge. The young couple, ages 19 and 23, worked hard to make and living and pay for Richard's college tuition. An MIT graduate, Richard served as a nuclear engineer for GE with assignments at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, and GE's headquarters in San Jose, California. In 1973, the couple and their four children moved to Escondido where they established Emerald Enterprises, a successful Tupperware franchise for 23 years. With a strong business acumen, Richard sponsored several business ventures ranging from home satellite services and promotion of Transdel Pharmaceuticals of La Jolla, a medical product for the treatment of arthritis. He was a shareholder and business advisor to Writing by Design, a corporation providing K-8th grade proven-effective writing instruction to schools and homeschool parents throughout the country with emerging international sales. Throughout his lifetime, he demonstrated countless deeds of dedication to the welfare of others earning the respect and affection of people from all walks of life and all ages, including his 101-year-old former next-door neighbor, Amelia Cooper, who he relocated to Escondido and cared for until her passing.

An active civic leader, Richard served as President of San Diego's Private Industry Council, member of Interfaith Community Services, and Rotarian.

Richard was a kind and caring man who enjoyed golfing, crossword puzzles, casino poker playing, football, and befriending hummingbirds. Although, he would admit that his greatest joy was spending time with family. He authored two books, Sonny and Growing Up Ferragamo, and became a fervent writer of letters to the editor of the San Diego Tribune, eventually expressing his opinions in a blog under his penname Roland Roberts. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, daughters Karen, Deborah, and Dawn Dubrule, son, Barry Dubrule and his wife Lanita, grandson Anthony Venier and his wife Autumn, great-grandsons Broderick and Lukas Venier, granddaughter Haili Dubrule and great-granddaughter Ellie Dubrule, older brother Sonny Dubrule, and several other dear relatives, and his closest friend from Michigan Bob Jubenville.

No matter the day or the condition of his health, when asked how he was feeling, he would boldly provide the same response, "Pretty good for a young guy." Richard brought 90 years of inspiration, support, love, joy and beautiful memories to all who knew him.

To celebrate Richard's lifetime contributions, the family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Elizabeth Hospice, online @ elizabethhospice.org, or by check to 500 La Terraza Blvd, Suite 130, Escondido, CA 92025, or phone 760.796.3737. Family and friends are welcome to schedule memorial visits after February 9, 2022, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. daily at El Camino Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley, 5600 Carroll Canyon Rd, San Diego.
