Frederic's father and grandfather were both also named Frederic Russell Nourse, which would make him Frederic Russell Nourse III (his great-grandfather was John Frederick Nourse), however, the grave marker of his son, who was also named Frederic Russell Nourse, incorrectly shows the son's name as Frederic Russell Nourse III instead of Frederic Russell Nourse IV.

This Frederic was a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He died, along with 17 other soldiers, when the Army truck in which they were returning from a weekend leave crashed through a bridge railing and down a 30-foot embankment at a railroad crossing on Woodycrest Avenue in a rural area southeast of Nashville.

His wife remarried in 1948, to Henry Lawrence Ross, as Henry's second wife.
