Born in Royston, GA, he was the son of the late Fred Thomas and Lillian Bowers Payne.

Thomas proudly served his country in the United States Army. He earned his Bachelors Degree from Furman University. After graduating from Furman, he began his career of teaching and coaching in the Greenville County Public School System. He loved Furman Basketball from his college days as their trainer through last month as an avid fan. One of his greatest enjoyments in life was being outdoors doing yard work, it brought him great peace. Thomas was a member of Berea First Baptist Church; a true man of God who loved with all he had. He truly loved being with his family, just spending time with them was his happiness. He was a great dad and wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather. He left a mark on the many lives he touched and his love and leadership will remain to be carried on by his loved ones.
