US Congressman. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army as a Sergeant in the 37th Company, 53rd Depot Brigade. After the war he became a coal mine operator and was successful in the wholesale produce business. From 1930 to 1934, he was sheriff of Macoupin County, Illinois and was a member of the State House of Representatives, 1934 to 1936. In 1937, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-fifth and Seventy-sixth Congresses, serving until 1941. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the wholesale produce business and was an arbitrator for the National Coal Industry, 1941 to 1969.
