MIDDLETOWN - Richard Catalan was born in the Melville part of Portsmouth, RI. He was one of 12 children born to Gaston and Edwina (Perry) Catalan.
He was a Portsmouth resident until August 2008 when he moved to John Clarke Nursing Home in Middletown, where he passed away, Thursday, September 29, 2011, after a long illness, with his son, Jay Catalan and longtime companion, Berniece "Bunny" Clohecy at his side.
Richard was a fire fighter in Portsmouth, retiring as Deputy Chief, after 32 years of service. He also ran a general contracting business until going into the nursing home.
Richard is survived by his two sons, Jeffrey Catalan of Tiverton, Jay Catalan of Portsmouth, a daughter Jenifer Rawlings and her husband, Eric of Orlando, FL, 6 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, his brothers, Gaston Catalan of Manhattan, KS, David Catalan of Bristol, Roger and Thomas Catalan both of Florida, his sisters, Virginia Apps of Corry, PA and Christine Buskirk of RI and many nieces and nephews.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his ex-wife, Regina (Reed) Catalan, his brother, Alfred Catalan, his sisters: Evelyn Green and Carolyn Guillemette and two siblings that died in infancy.
A graveside service to which relatives and friends are invited will be held on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at 9 a.m. in Portsmouth Cemetery, Turnpike Avenue, Portsmouth.
