Markle "Mark" Probasco Hansen died peacefully in his home on the evening of Wednesday, June 23, 2021. The devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, dentist and friend will be sorely missed, as his unexpected passing has been a shock to all who knew him.
Mark was born in Coronado, on March 10, 1953, to Leo and Helen Hansen. The youngest of his six siblings and cousins, Mark was adored by his family, and he revered them deeply. Mark had a storybook childhood growing up in Coronado; spending his days working his paper route, serving as acolyte at Christ Episcopal Church and lifeguarding at the beach.
Mark graduated from CHS in 1971, and lettered in both varsity swimming and water polo all four years. Following high school, he attended the University of California at Riverside, where he earned a BS in biology while lettering in varsity swimming and water polo.
Upon graduation, Mark married the love of his life, Deborah Felter, in 1976. For their honeymoon, they moved to San Antonio, Texas. The newlyweds lived there for five years while he earned his Doctorate in Dentistry at the University of Texas, San Antonio.
After completion of Dental School, Mark and Debbie moved back to Coronado, where he received a commission as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. He served three years at MCRD and two years on the USS Constellation.
Following his naval service, he entered private practice in San Diego, where he mastered the craft of dentistry over 31 years. He loved his work, his colleagues, his employees and his patients. His drive for excellence and his passion for his profession can be seen in the smiles of many Coronado and San Diego residents to this day.
He served on the Coronado Hospital Board, was a founding member of the San Diego Chapter RV Tucker Cast Gold Study Club, and a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry.
When not working, Mark could be found in lane one at Coronado Masters Swimming, running around the island with family members, riding the Strand on his coveted road bike, and most recently, playing pickle ball at the Coronado Marriott. As an avid triathlete, for many years he placed at the top of his age group in Southern California events. One of his yearly highlights was competing in the Coronado Optimist Club Sports Fiesta.
Above all, Mark was a family man, who loved his family deeply and unwaveringly. He enjoyed nothing else more than watching his daughters grow up and cheering them on in their endeavors, playing the role of papa to his three grandchildren, gathering for family celebrations, and calling his brothers for daily advice. His devotion to his wife, children and family is a testament to the genuine, unique and caring man Mark was. His absence will be an unfillable void in our tight knit clan.
Mark is survived by his devoted wife Deborah; his cherished daughters Lexey Hansen, Brittany (Jason) Lindquist, and Hilary Hansen; his treasured grandchildren Graycen, William and Vance; his brothers Leo (Pam) Hansen, Dr. David (Mickey) Hansen, and Allen (Janie) Hansen; his beloved cousins John (Susan) Probasco, Preston (Cynthia) Probasco, and Peggy (Ted Courtwright) Tarbell; his many nieces, nephews and their children; as well as his loyal dog Piper.
A service will be held on Saturday Sept. 18, 2021 at 3 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, in Coronado, reception to follow. The family wishes that donations be made to the Islanders Sports Foundation at ISF, P.O. Box 181115, Coronado, CA 92178.
