Mattie was the daughter of Luther Simmons and Georgia Mae Simmons. She was educated in the Dooly County School System and graduated from Unadilla High School in Unadilla, Georgia. She was a member of Camp Creek Baptist Church in Unadilla, Georgia. She enjoyed dancing.
She was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Tekeya Simmons and 3 sisters, Georgia Lee Sanders, Mattie Mae Simmons and Lela M. Simmons Powell.

1 Brother: John Simmons.
4 Nieces: Arkeisha Simmons, Sheila Asley(James), Elisa Dunwood and Dondra Kimbrough.
3 Nephews: Keyshawn Johnson, Carlron Calhoun(Catherine) and John Simons Jr.
3 Devoted Friends: Annie Kate Fudge, Rosa Taylor and Augustus Wynn.
