Gregory was the son of Willie Oscar Williams and Lucy Bell Berryhill Williams. He was educated in the Lee County School System and was a Class of 1977 graduate of Lee County High School in Leesburg, Georgia. He was employed with Davidson Textron and Collins & Aikman of (Proctor & Gamble). He later ran his own lawn care service until his retirement. He enjoyed landscaping, softball, playing basketball, watching both basketball and football, cooking on the grill and welding. His favorite team was the Pittsburg Steelers. He inherited a love for raising hogs and goats from his grandfather, who called him "Jim Dandy". He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board and Church Custodian.
He was married to Velma Lisa James Williams.
