Roberta "Bertie" F. Smith, 91, passed away on January 31, 2022 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on March 26, 1930 to Robert and Flossie (Horner) Tarr in Moravia, Iowa.
Bertie was the matriarch of our family as well as being the best wife, mom, grandma, great grandma and great great grandma anyone could ever ask for.
Bertie moved to Fort Madison when she was 18 after graduating High School, she worked for Sheaffer Pen Company and J.C. Penny's in Fort Madison. Bertie met the love of her life Eddie Smith while he was playing 12th Street Rag at a house party. Bertie and Eddie married on November 10, 1951 at Santa Fe United Methodist Church in Fort Madison and he preceded her in death on September 25, 1992. She was a long-time member of Santa Fe United Methodist now Fort Madison United Methodist Church.
She was a lover of animals; she grew up on a farm surrounded by animals of all kinds but had a deep love for her cats and her dogs. She was a woman of many talents from baking delicious deserts, making clothing, working on projects around the house, and playing with her grandchildren. Bertie would spend hours playing with her grandchildren and making sure that they had everything they could ever ask for. If they wanted something that couldn't be bought, she would try to find a way to make it for them.
As her grandchildren got older, she started to Volunteer at the Salvation Army in Fort Madison where she would meet many people and listen to their stories. She became a staple there and would spend countless hours listening to people (which she loved to do). Bertie met some life-long friends while there and would still talk with them on a weekly basis just to check in and chat for hours some more. She was greatly loved by many and will be sorely missed by.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Eddie, her sister Susie Magee, her niece Judy Boltz, and her parents.
The family will greet friends from 10 – 11 AM on Monday, February 7, 2022 at King Lynk Funeral Home, & Crematory. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM following the visitation with Rev. Kayla Carney officiating. She will be laid to rest next to the love of her life in Soldier's Circle at Oakland Cemetery. A memorial has been established for PAW Animal Shelter or Ft.
