Bernice Jane McCoy, 95, formerly of Danville, IL, passed into the loving arms of her Savior on January 26, 2022 at her apartment in Heritage Creekside Assisted Living in Kissimmee, FL.

Bernice was born May 19, 1926 in Danville, Illinois, the youngest daughter of Ray and Mabel Huffman. She married the love of her life, Fred McCoy, on June 2, 1946. They had met when she was only 15 and he was in the Army stationed at Fort Knox, KY. They corresponded throughout his service during WW II when he returned to marry her. They were happily married for 63 years.

Bernice was a graduate of Danville High School. She was blessed to be a stay-at-home mom while her children were growing up and enjoyed volunteering through the years with the Washington School PTA, as a Scout troop leader, and as a Dorm Mom and, later, a Key Lady at Hanging Rock Christian Camp. She and Fred also enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels after they retired.

Bernice's faith was very important to her and she was blessed with a servant's heart. She was active at Second Church of Christ over the years serving as a Sunday School teacher, youth sponsor, with their Missions Committee and Ladies Ministry. She enjoyed being a part of the Oasis Bible Study and was a part of the Cookie Ministry welcoming visitors and new members. She also volunteered at Northland Christian Church for a while serving in multiple offices with their Ladies Ministry. She loved planning banquets and helping co-ordinate their annual Ladies' Day. Bernice also volunteered at Pleasant Meadows Nursing Home in Chrisman, IL where she served as a Key Lady for their Auxiliary and helped coordinate their Bazaar and other special events. She served as Treasurer for the Vermilion County Churches of Christ for many years and helped organize special events for them. She loved making multiple phone calls inviting people to attend and be involved in the different services.

Bernice was known for her hospitality. She and Fred hosted many "weenie roasts" and other outings at their campers at Indian Springs and, later, Leisure Time Estates. There were many rides given on their pontoon boat. She hosted many people for dinners and to play cards and dominos. She never knew a stranger and could learn your life story in less than an hour. She was always including the widow ladies and others that might be lonely and never attended any church function without filling her van to give others rides.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents, sister Josephine (Marvin) Anderson, brother Dale Huffman, sister-in-law Anadele Huffman, and son-in-law Fred Heck.

She is survived by her daughter Beckie Heck, son Allan McCoy, grandchildren Stephanie Heck and Dale McCoy, niece Lisa (Dean) Dillon, and many cherished friends.

A memorial service was held at Heritage Creekside in Kissimmee, FL.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Second Church of Christ Danville, IL, 61834, 3350 East Voorhees Street, Danville, IL 61834. Pastor Dale DeNeal will officiate. Entombment will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.
