Jack was the son of Jack Lowell Johnson Jr and Janice Shanks Johnson. He was educated in the Clarke County School System and was a Class of 1985 graduate of Quitman High School in Quitman, Mississippi. He played wide receiver for the high school football team and stared during the 1984 Homecoming Game and the Jaycee Bowl Game. He also ran track and excelled in the 100-yard dash, 4 x 400 and 4 x 800 relays. He attended the University of West Alabama in Livingston Alabama where he majored in Business Administration and Information Systems Technology. He earned his Master's Degree in Public Safety Administration from Columbus State University in May of 2014.
He grew up attending the Elwood Church of God in Quitman, Mississippi. He was currently a member of Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Kathleen, Georgia serving under Rev Dr Lonnie L. Slater.
After graduating, he was employed with B.C. Moore's Department Store in Saluda, South Carolina as the Assistant Manager. He later opened the first B.C. Moore's Store in Perry, Georgia in 1993. Following in his maternal grandfather Simon Shanks Sr's footsteps, he became a Patrolman with the Perry Police Department (PPD) in Perry, Georgia for almost 26 years, starting in June of 1996. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 2006 and was currently a Senior Lieutenant in the Patrol Division. He was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia April 2021.
He was married to Dr. Sherry Whigham Johnson for 31 years, they had 2 sons. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Jack Johnson Sr and Corine Johnson, his maternal grandparents, Simon Shanks Sr and Barbara Portis Shanks and Leona Thompson, his father-in-law, James Bamous Whigham and 1 cousin, Simon Shanks III.

Mother: Janice Shanks Johnson.
Mother-In-Law: Julia Mae Whigham.
2 Brothers: Jonathan Laurence Johnson (Rochelle) and Jason Lamont Johnson(Melissa).
3 Aunts: Kathy Thomas, Tanya Gray and Marvis Johnson.
