Stephen C. Mills, M.D., 77, of Hutchinson, passed away January 20, 2022, at Hospice House.

He was born August 1, 1944, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, the son of Robert and Marcella Mills. Stephen graduated from Stillwater High School, Oklahoma State University, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and OU School of Medicine. He spent ten years in the United States Navy, achieving the rank of Commander and his duty stations included San Diego, CA, Okinawa, Japan and Newport, RI. He also served tours of duty on two nuclear submarines.

In 1986, Stephen joined the practice of the Hutchinson Medical Center and was a radiologist for over twenty years before retiring.

His great passions were travel and live theatre. Stephen and his spouse, Denny, traveled the world and he was very proud of having been on all seven continents. Trips to New York to see Broadway shows were frequent, but he was just as happy seeing or participating in local theatre. He was active in the Hutchinson Theatre Guild and worked many hours on the renovation of the facility that would become Stage 9. Throughout the years, Stephen served on the boards of the Theatre Guild, Hutchinson Symphony, Hutchinson Art Center, Kansas Fairground Foundation, and Kansas Creative Arts Industry Commission.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hutchinson, where he served as an elder and a dedicated member of the church choir and handbell choir.

Stephen is survived by: his spouse, Denny Vick; sister, Mary Sue Forsman (Doug), Fairfield Bay, Arkansas; and nephews, Kevin and Jon and their families; as well as feline companions, Farrell and Blackey.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 5, 2022, at First Presbyterian Church of Hutchinson, 201 E. Sherman, with Reverend Christine Kass and Pastor Keith Neill officiating. Reception will follow.

The family wishes to thank Hospice & HomeCare of Reno County and Stephen's personal caregivers, Sandy and Pam. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a Reno County arts organization of your choice. Suggestions include Stage 9, Hutchinson's Historic Fox Theatre, Hutchinson Symphony, Hutchinson Arts Center, or Family Community Theatre, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main St., Hutchinson, KS 67501
