Phyllis Irene Martin was born in Bussey, Iowa on February 1, 1934, to Miles and Pearl Parker. She grew up in the Bussey area, the youngest of three girls. She graduated from Bussey High School in 1952. She married Allen Hoksburgen on December 19, 1950 and to this union, they were blessed with two children: Patti and Daryl. Phyllis later married Calvin Martin February 22, 1965, and they were blessed with a son, Brad Martin.

Phyllis worked on the farm and drove an 18-wheeler, and to show how diversified her talents were, she also worked as a cosmetologist. When Calvin suddenly passed away in 1980, she began working at Midwest Mutual (Preferred Risk) Insurance Company until her retirement.

Phyllis was known for her cooking and baking, especially the wedding cakes she made for people all over the country. Phyllis collected cookbooks and helped to produce the Christian Union Church Cookbook. Phyllis was a devoted Christian, having been a member of the Christian Union Church in Milo since the 1960's.

She was a social butterfly with a love for others. When she moved to the care center five years ago, she became very involved in the social activities, and even became wonderful friends with her roommate, Jeanie. Phyllis loved visiting with people and especially children, and so many all knew her as Grandma. She loved and was loved by so many people that called her family and a friend and would want all to know she appreciated them so much, including her nursing home family.

Phyllis is survived by her sons: Daryl Hoksburgen and Brad Martin; son-in-law, Gary Chumbley; grandchildren: Shannon (Walter) Hommer, Garrett (Tiffany) Chumbley, Kyle Shelley, Dana Martin, and Sarah Martin; great grandchildren: Macey (Bryce) Dennis, Alex Hommer, Seth Chumbley, and Luke Chumbley; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family of the Wisconsin Martin and Pella Van Gendren families all of whom she stayed close to over the years.

Preceding her in death are her daughter, Patti Chumbley; infant son, Arvin Wayne Hoksburgen; parents: Miles and Pearl Parker; and sisters: Maxine Bonnett and Josephine Van Rees.
