obituary

Lovingly called many nicknames by her family throughout life, Dawnie, Skosh, Pee Pot, Bunny, and Donna, it shows just how much Karla Dawn
was adored by her family. Karla Dawn Johnson was the second born out of five children to the late Karl Alonzo and Mary Louise (Mosley) Johnson on December 19, 1957. Karla was baptized early in life at Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Bessemer, Alabama under the direction of her grandfather, the late Reverend O. V. Mosley. Karla was a joy to be around and had the gift of gab. Everyone who met her just loved her joyful spirit. She loved people and her very favorite thing to do was play Bid Whist with her family and friends. Her other hobbies besides chit-chatting with her friends was watching the Hallmark Channel, old westerns, reruns of her favorite shows, and would roll in the den to sit and watch Bold and the Beautiful with her sister, Bess, and brother-in-law, Victor, when she had to laugh and joke about the soap opera. Karla graduated from Wenonah High School in Birmingham, Alabama, class of 1975. She went on to attend college at Alabama State University, Gasden State College, and Bessemer Technical, where she earned her cashiering diploma. Karla loved working with the public. She was employed by Lovemans, Pizitz, McRaes, and Parisians department stores. She was loyal to her trade and worked in retail for over 23 years of service. She had to give up the job she loved due to illness. She finished her service in the children's department of Parisians, but before doing so, she was able to see her nephew walk down the runway and model clothes for her and the Parisians Department Store Children's Fashion Show at Western Hills Mall.
Karla was a huge fan of University of Alabama football and basketball teams. She loved going to the games with her mother who was a season
ticket holder. Karla, her mother, Mary, and her sisters, Mica and Bess, would hit the road going to Legion Field, Tuscaloosa or as far as Los
Angeles, California to hit the stadium with sister, Olivette " Peaches," also to see an Alabama game. It was a family affair. Karla loved sports, always coming in the den or calling Peaches or Tara Lynn on the phone telling her family about her favorite basketball player, Stephen Curry,
and what he had done in the game. She was a joy to be around. Karla loved the Lord and always acknowledged Him as her Savior. With all of her illnesses and her pain, she was known for never complaining. Nothing stole her joy. She always had a smile on her face, even in the end. She joined Saint Matthew Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Eddie J. Washington, Pastor. She loved Bible Study and Sunday School. She even continued to attend in person and on Zoom calls. She remained a faithful member until the end.

Karla Dawn was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 21, 2022, at approximately 8:50 PM, due to complications with kidney stone
surgery. She will dearly be missed. Karla was preceded in death by her father, Karl Alonzo Johnson, Sr.; her grandfather, Reverend O.V. Mosley; her mother, Mary Louise Mosley Johnson; her grandmother, Bessie Johnson Mosley; her aunt, Mildred "Shot" "Tee" Mosley Donald; sister, Mica Letitia Johnson. She leaves to cherish her memories: a loving sister, Olivette Charlene "Peaches" Sasser of Inglewood, California; a very devoted sister and caregiver, Bess Loutrice Johnson; devoted brother-in-law and caregiver, Victor Bernard Griffin; a very special brother, Karl Alonzo Johnson,
Jr., all of Birmingham, Alabama; her precious nephew, Micah Mosley Griffin of Flowood, Mississippi; her loving cousins, Tara Lynn Donald (Roderick) Walls and Gail Elizabeth Hicks, all of Birmingham, Alabama; younger cousins, Cara Lynn Walls of Birmingham, Alabama and R. Livingston (Yicelys) Walls of Hoover, Alabama; her best friend from high school, Linda Briggs; her very best friend from her work years, Geraldine Bates; and many more cousins and friends to the family.

Viewing will be held Wednesday, January 26, 2022, from noon until 6:00 P.M. at Smith & Gaston Funeral Home. Funeral will be held Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at Saint Matthew Missionary Baptist Church 202 6th Street Docena, Alabama 35060 with interment in Elmwood Cemetery.
