Carl "Tootie" Abeloe was born to Carl and Elinor (Howard) Abeloe in Santa Maria, CA. He was raised on the family farm outside Los Alamos with his brother, Marion "Butch", and sister, Laura Christine. He began working at age 13 in the family business, Abeloe Farming, which had been started by his grandfather in 1922. He worked with his father and uncles dry farming beans and grains in the Los Alamos and Lompoc Valleys. He attended Los Alamos Grammar School and graduated from Santa Maria High School.
He married another Los Alamos native, Charlene "Sherry" LaFontaine, the woman he would love beyond measure for 63 years, in 1958 in the Los Alamos Presbyterian Church. As he liked to say, his friend Emmett LaFontaine became his beloved brother-in-law at that time, as well. Carl's son Carl Abeloe, Jr. was born soon after and daughter Tiffany followed a few years later.
Carl and Charlene moved to Santa Maria where she surprised him one day by buying a house while he was at work. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves in Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and Fort Ord, CA. After his honorable discharge, he worked for Knudsen and Foremost dairies and then Hostess Cake as a route driver and salesman. The family moved to San Luis Obispo in 1969. He retired in 1993 but, as he liked to tell it, when Charlene introduced him to the vacuum cleaner, he went back to work for J.B. Dewar for another 10 years. He thoroughly enjoyed his work making oil and fuel deliveries for Dewar to the farms and ranches throughout the Central Coast.
Carl enjoyed quail, deer, and elk hunts with his son in Arizona and Wyoming. He loved to golf and made many lifelong friends he met on the golf course. He liked playing baseball and coached Little League and followed Dodger baseball all his life. Summers and weekends our family truck farmed pumpkins and banana squash and dry farmed oat hay on the farm in Los Alamos. Carl and Charlene moved back to the house he grew up in and he spent his final years there. He died of heart failure at home with his family with him.
Our dad was a man of honor and strength. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and fought the disease valiantly and without self-pity for 23 years, including as an official in the San Luis Obispo Parkinson's Support Group. Our mom was his loving caregiver throughout the years of his decline from Parkinson's disease. True to his nature, he would never mention his troubles, but would instead always want to know how his kids and their families were and his concern to the very end was always for our mom. He was so worried about the "burden" he placed on our mom as his body betrayed him regardless of how many times he was assured it was her honor and love to care for him. He had the heart of a lion and never met a stranger. He was social and gregarious and thoroughly enjoyed getting together with his friends and family, especially his cousin Jimmy Abeloe. He sorely missed talking and laughing with people as his voice faded and his hearing loss worsened. He had an unlimited number of stories of growing up in Los Alamos and the characters therein and he kept us laughing with them. Dad was immensely proud of and loved his family. He was our anchor and our strength and it is hard not to feel adrift without him here. We miss him to no end, but we know he is still with us in spirit and is beyond the pain and distress of his earthly body.

In addition to his wife, Charlene, Carl is survived by his daughter Tiffany (Doug), son Carl, Jr. (Lisa), granddaughter Lauren, grandson Mark (Kayleigh), great-granddaughters Marley and Zoey, and cousins James "Jimmie" Abeloe, and Donny Abeloe.

Masked and distanced services will be at the Los Alamos Community Church on February 5 at 10 a.m. Interment will be at a later date in Los Alamos Cemetery.
