Mary Lanham Herrick Lucas
April 4, 1927 - January 21, 2022
Columbia, South Carolina - Mary Lanham Herrick Lucas, widow of Thomas Mills Lucas and sister of deceased Patricia Jean Herrick Jennings, died January 21, 2022. As she slipped away her hand was held by Kit and Pat Jennings at her bedside. She was born in Lincoln, Nebraska to William Allan Herrick and Ellie Miller Lanham Herrick.
Her childhood was spent in part in Pickens, but the majority in Columbia, SC where she graduated from Dreher High School in 1945, then Winthrop College in 1949.
She also studied in the post graduate level at USC in Columbia for Library Science. Her love of books and reading served her well in her 26-year vocation at the University of South Carolina Library System, in both the McKissick and Thomas Cooper Libraries.
Always friendly, quick witted and joyful, Mary had many friends through the years in Columbia where she continued to reside on Aralia Road then later at Carolina Gardens Kathwood. She most enjoyed going out to lunch with friends and attending services at Main Street Methodist Church in Columbia. Always prompt, Mary was dressed and ready to ride or receive company at least thirty minutes ahead of time. Kit (nephew) and Pat Jennings were frequent visitors at Carolina Gardens and Mary delighted in their gift packages that always contained her favorite Starlight Mints.
Mary's extended family are: Patricia Jean Jennings Cornwell (Mike), Jennings Cornwell King (Brennen), Bennette Bowman Cornwell; Caleb Brown Jennings, III -Kit (Pat), Jean Marie Jennings Watkins (Buck), Laura Patricia Jennings Estevez (Jorge), Caleb Brown Jennings, IV (Daniela); Mary Ellen Jennings Kiser (Don), Donald Lee Kiser, Jr. (Katie), Mary Patricia Kiser Smith (Parker); Harold Lanham Jennings, Ellie Giles Jennings, and Katherine Lanham Jennings. (Repeated names of Mary, Lanham, Jean, Patricia and Ellie are a tribute to Mary and the Herrick side of the family).
The Lucas side of the family includes Patricia Cameron Rivers of Pickens (Vickie, Mary Kim, Cameron; and Thomas Marcus Lucas of Aiken SC (Jimmy and Marcus).
A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Park, 845 Leesburg Road, Columbia, SC 29209. The service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 29th, 2022 with the Reverend Lex McDonald of Main Street United Methodist Church Officiating.
