GREENLAND — Ruth Carlton, 87, of Greenland, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007, at her home.

She was born on Sept. 25, 1920, the daughter of Thomas J. Brackett and Blanche (Brownell) Brackett, at Great Bay Farms Greenland.

She attended local schools and went on to receive a two year degree from the School of Fashion Design in Boston. She married John L. Carlton in 1947. She was a lifelong citizen of Greenland, a seamstress and bookkeeper, active in the community church as well as other volunteer organizations, receiving the Paul Harris Award for service.

She is survived by her daughters, Beth Rolston and Marilyn Page; their husbands, Jim Rolston and Glenn Page; two grandchildren, Heidi and Jon Rolston; three sisters, Mary Gowen and husband, George, Martha Wing and Elaine Klucken and her husband, Bruce; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, John; their infant daughter, Cynthia; three brothers, Thomas, John and David; and a sister, Dorothy Street.

SERVICES: Visiting hours will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the J. Verne Wood Funeral Home - Buckminster Chapel, 84 Broad St., Portsmouth. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Greenland Community Congregational Church, 2 Post Road. Internment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Greenland. Family flowers only. Donations may be made to the Greenland Community Congregational Church, P.O. Box 128, Greenland NH 03840.
