Pioneer Woman of Park County Dies

Mrs. Matilda J. Bruffey, wife of George A. Bruffey, died late Thursday at the family home on Mission creek. Mrs. Bruffey, whose maiden name was Matilda J. Ridden, was born in Decatur county, Indiana, September 26, 1847. While she was still an infant, her parents moved to Marion county, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. She was married to George A. Bruffey February 12, 1871.

Mr. and Mrs. Bruffey came to Montana the following spring, coming from Omaha to Corrine by railroad and from Corrine to Jefferson valley by teams. Mr. and Mrs. Bruffey kept the Fish Creek station on the Salt Lake and Helena stage line for many years.

About 20 years ago Mr. and Mrs. Bruffey came to Park county, locating on a ranch on Mission creek. That place has since been their home.

Mrs. Bruffey was the mother of 11 children, eight girls and three boys. Of these 10 are living and are residents of Park and Sweet Grass counties. The eleventh child, whose name was Ruth, was killed by an infuriated bull, July 19, 1905.

Mrs. Bruffey was a very kind and loving woman and her death will be greatly deplored. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but interment will be made late tomorrow or Sunday at the ranch home on Mission creek.
