Born October 1, 1921 in Alexandria, Louisiana. She was affectionately known by her family and friends as "Aunt Doe". She was raised in Alexandria, and attended Bolton High School. She lived in Baton Rouge and New Orleans where she worked at Gus Mayer Department Store and after returning to Alexandria, worked at Wellan's and Weiss and Goldring.
Dora Mae was preceded in death by her parents Octave Ludger Gremillion, Sr. and Etna Ruth Lacour originally of Plaucheville, Louisiana as well as her brothers: Ambrose, Dewey, Tellis James, Octave L., Jr. and Robert J Gremillion Sr; her sisters Viola G. Deville, Maude G. Dufour, Adeline G. Dufour and Ruth Marie G. Damico and her niece, and often travel companion, Delores Renda. She also outlived two husbands, Charles Hammond and Bob James.
Aunt Doe was proud of her independence, living on her own in an upstairs apt. until she was 97 years old. She loved to take trips with Spangler Tours and was always up for a drive or outing somewhere. She was strong in her Catholic faith and most of all, loved her family (and sweets!).
Those left to cherish her memory include her sister-in-law, Betty Gremillion Rogers; a myriad of nieces and nephews and her dearest friend, Mary Bailey. In lieu of flowers, please consider having masses said for her. She attended every Catholic Church in Alexandria or Pineville and beyond whenever she was able.
Funeral Service for Dora Mae Gremillion James will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26, 2022, at John Kramer & Son Funeral Home with Rev. Craig Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Park.
