Ironworker served in WWII

James W. "Red" Butcher Sr., 85, of Bulger, died Thursday, April 27, 2006, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington.

He was born February 10, 1921, in Cedar Grove, a son of George and Margaret Deer Butcher.

Mr. Butcher served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army Amphibious Engineers during World War II.

He was an ironworker with Local 3 of United Iron Workers for 37 years before retiring in 1983.

Mr. Butcher was a life member of Iron Workers and a member of Sturgeon Bowling League and Burgettstown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6955. He also was inducted into Washington-Greene County chapter of Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, having played for Avella Polar Star soccer team and the 1938-39 and 1939-40 National Jr. Cup champions.

On May 10, 1943, he married Leona M. Lecouvre, who died August 22, 2003.

Surviving are a daughter, Kathy (John) Thomas of Bulger; a son, James W. "Butch" (Susan) Butcher Jr. of Ambridge; a brother, Glenn Butcher of Claysville; and a grandson, Joshua Thomas.

Deceased are a brother, George Butcher Jr., and a sister, Naomi Ewing.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in Nation Funeral Home Inc., 220 East Lincoln Avenue, McDonald, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 1, with the Rev. John Dickie, pastor of United Presbyterian Church, Ambridge, officiating. Burial will follow in Robinson Run Cemetery, McDonald. The family suggests memorial donations be sent to Burgettstown VFW Post 6955.
