Laura Elizabeth Henry Schaefer, 83, died Aug. 18, 2004, at Missouri Delta Medical Center. She was a resident of the Bertrand Nursing Facility for the past two years.
Born May 14, 1921, in New Madrid, daughter of the late James Dawson and Lula Ann Sanders Henry, she was a longtime member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and Daughters of Isabella, Altar Sodality and Legion of Mary. She had worked in the printing and circulation departments of the Standard Democrat. As a homemaker, she loved her family and friends, cooking, crafting and gardening.
On Aug. 17, 1946, in the Old St. Louis Cathedral, she married Joseph R. Schaefer who preceded her in death on Jan. 1, 2003.
Survivors include: two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and George Hale and Jackie and Joe Bill Davis; one son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Davene Schaefer; one sister, Katie Roper; one brother, J.B. Henry; eight grandchildren, Staff Sgt. Loy Anne Brown, Lisa James, Kassie Jones, Leslie Ballard, Adam Davis, Matt Davis and Martin Schaefer and Terri Rhea Schaefer; and five great-grandchildren, Bayleah James, Jordan Elizabeth James, Carson James, Madelyn Brown and Logan Brown. Also preceding her in death were three brothers, Welton Henry, Dennis Henry and A.T. Henry; and three sisters, Alleen Ruddle, Colleen Thornbrough and Doris Carney.
Visitation was held at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel.
A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with Monsignor Stephen Schneider, pastor, officiating.
Burial followed in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Jim Null, Danny Owens, George Hale, David Moyers, Lanny Satterfield and Steve Hunter.
