Mary was born Mary Elizabeth Barbee in Battle Creek, Marion County, Tennessee to Matthew Barbee and Rebecca McCormick 19 Jan 1826. She died in Crooked Creek Township, Boone County, Arkansas. Buried in the White Church Cemetery among many family members and descendants.

Married Andrew Jackson Lee about 1845 not long after the Barbee and Lee families moved to SW Missouri from Marion County, Tennessee, where they had been neighbors. The Barbee family consisted of four brothers, one sister, and their widowed mother Rebecca Barbee. The Lee family consisted of five siblings and their widowed mother Rhoda Lee.

Andrew Jackson Lee died in Newton County, Missouri before 1860. No cause of death or burial site is known. They had four children.

Between 1866 and 1870 the widow Mary Elizabeth Barbee Lee moved with her children to Boone County, Arkansas where members of her mother's family had moved. There she lived with one of her sons until her death. Other sons moved their families to Central Texas and South Central Oklahoma where many of Mary's descendants still reside. Mary's only daughter remained in Arkansas and is also buried in the White Church Cemetery.

In her last will and testament, Mary's mother refers to Mary as "Polly".
