Joanna Ching-Ping Wong Jones, a member of Wilshire Baptist Church in Dallas, died Feb. 14 from complications following a kidney transplant. She was 68. She was born Feb. 12, 1953, in Hong Kong to Chi Chung Wong and Ching Hok Tseng. She met Bill Jones in 1972 when they were students at Oklahoma Baptist University. They married Sept. 4, 1976, at University Baptist Church in Shawnee, Okla. She made her profession of faith in Christ in August 1981 and was baptized at University Hills Baptist Church in Denver, Colo. In 1984, she celebrated two major achievements—earning her license as a certified public accountant and her U.S. citizenship. She worked 34 years as a financial analyst for Mobil Oil Company, later ExxonMobil. She and her husband have been members of Wilshire Baptist Church and its Epiphany Sunday school class since 2004. Just weeks before her death, she described to the Epiphany class the pain and fear she felt when Asian Americans were blamed for the COVID-19 pandemic. She told the class she worried every time she set foot outside her home that she might be targeted by hatred and violence. After her death, one class member wrote in an email to her husband, thanking her for "the most powerful Sunday School class I have sat through in my 70 years." She was preceded in death by her father and a brother, Jovan Wong. She is survived by her husband Bill; daughter and her husband; son T; four grandchildren; her mother; two sisters, ; and a brother.
