Gary was a salesman for over 60 years. He spent 22 years in piano sales and for over 35 years in printing and promotional product sales. He was active in gospel music and was the president of the monthly Booster Singing Convention in Monroe in the 1970's, as well as at both the Louisiana State Singing Convention and the Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas Tri-State singing convention for over 15 years. He was also president at the National Singing Convention held in Ruston in 1980. Gary sang with the Master's Quartet for 16 years.

A West Monroe Civitan Club member since 1980, he served as secretary/treasurer and President, as well as Lieutenant Governor for the Louisiana North District. Gary was a member of Fair Park Baptist Church.
Gary was a faithful visitor at the West Monroe Guest House during his wife's time there and following her death, he continued to visit weekly a friend he had developed while visiting his wife. When Gary's aunt by marriage became a resident at the Guest House he also weekly visited her and his friend on Fridays with a fish place.
