Born in Drumnagoon Northern Ireland. Emigrated to the United States with his father Samuel, Mother Jane Bullock Hutchinson, and first cousin, Johnson James Hutchinson. He settled with his family in Russell, St. Lawrence County, New York, USA. He purchased a small farm next to his father's farm on the Belleville Road in Russell. He married the widow Lorinda Demmon Russ 10 October 1850 in Russell. Lorinda came into the marriage with two boys, and together they had 5 children between 1851 and 1860. He volunteered along with his cousin Johnson in Company K, 142nd New York Infantry, the "Saint Lawrence County Regiment", on August 30th, 1862. He was elected by the company as Second Sergeant. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 13 Feb, 1863. David Hutchinson was killed in action in the Battle of Fair Oaks and Darbytown Road on October 27th, 1864, when his regiment was part of an ill-conceived attack against Confederate forces occupying the entrenchments defending Richmond.
