Scrooge

Don Ellis, 71, of Lordville, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2021, at Wilson Hospital. He was born April 3,1950, in Gouverneur, NY to Donald Jay Sr. and Bertel Paro Ellis, who predeceased him.

Don graduated from Downsville Central School. He worked for the Delaware County DPW until 1971 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army serving with the 101st Airborne Division until his discharge in 1973. He then resumed his career with Delaware County, until his retirement in 2006 as the foreman of the Fishs Eddy Patrol. Post retirement, Don assumed the position of Town of Hancock Transfer Station part time attendant along with the name, Dumpster Don.

Some of his favorite times were spent at hunting camp with his sons, grandchildren and special friends, playing a round of golf with his grandson, brothers, and golfing buddies, playing cards with the Fighting 289ers, and along with Terri, hosting the annual Ellis family reunion.

Scrooge's love of family, friends, and community was evident in all that he did. He was his grandchildren's biggest fan and would travel near and far to watch them play team sports. He was so very proud of them in everything they did. Don was a role model as Little League coach for over 30 years, coached Small Fry Football, was a swim instructor for the youth recreation program and was instrumental in construction of the Readburn Athletic Field. Don could often be seen at a Hancock High School sporting event enjoying the camaraderie of friends and neighbors. At the time of his death, Don was also serving as Vice-Commander of Hancock American Legion Post 289.

When you think of Scrooge Ellis, you think of laughter. His booming voice rose above all others in a crowd. His jokes were the best. His wit, unequaled. Don Ellis was happiness. He was always the center of a crowd, telling stories and making everyone laugh. He loved children and never said no to a child.

He would do anything for anyone. This kindness came back to him ten-fold with the amazing golf tournament held this fall. It meant so much to Don to see everyone and be able to connect with so many friends, family, and community members for such a special day in his life. A day of wonderful memories he held dearly ever after.

Don was the very best husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend and we are so thankful to have had him in our lives.

He is survived by his wife, Terri Rhodes Ellis; his children; Eric Ellis (Gina), Kevin Ellis (Rachael), Jennifer Holton, Patrick Holton; his grandchildren; Eli Holton who Don thought of as his son, Heaven Houck (Josh Koch), Garrett Ellis, Cali Ellis, and Caleb Ellis; brothers, Randy Ellis, Timothy Ellis (Daphanie), Barry Ellis; Sisters, Elaine Lehr (Robert) and Dawn Finch (Kirk); Sister-in-law Linda Ellis; Longtime friend, Bill Kaufman Sr.; Little Buddy, JJ. Don was beloved Uncle Scroogie to many nieces and nephews. He was looking forward to the birth of his first great grandchild, Hudson, in March 2022.

Don was predeceased by his brothers, Darwin, Clarence, Dennis, Loren, and Steven McLain.

Calling hours will be Tuesday, December 28, 2021, at Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel from 11:00am to 1pm. A graveside service will follow at 2PM, with full military honors, at the East Branch Cemetery, East Branch, NY, with Rev Roxie Moses officiating.
