On Wednesday, December 22, 2021, Roger Earl Murphy, affectionately known as "Squatty", passed away peacefully surrounded by caring family and friends. Roger was born and reared in Portsmouth on October 2, 1947 to William Matthew, Sr., and Mary Agnes Powell Murphy.

Roger attended Portsmouth Public Schools and went on to work as a brick mason and painter for many years. He had an eye for detail, and it was beautifully expressed in his craft. For many years, Roger along with one of his brethren in Christ volunteered by painting areas in the church to prepare for the opening of St. Mark Christian Academy. He enjoyed life, family, friends, and fellowship. Along with being dedicated to his artistry, he was also truly devoted to family as he helped take care of his elderly mother during her illness.

He was reared in a Christian environment and grew to accept the Lord for himself. As a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, he was a faithful member of the Male Usher Ministry until his health declined. He was very committed to what he enjoyed doing. He grew up in the Douglas Park Community where he was loved by his neighbors who found him to be friendly and caring. He will be fondly remembered as a neat dresser and having a great sense of humor.

He leaves to cherish his memory, one sister Mary Ann Brown and her husband Robert of Chesapeake, VA; one brother William Matthew Murphy, Jr., his wife Daisy of Chesapeake, VA and one sister-in-law, Patricia Murphy of Chesapeake, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his loving parents William Murphy, Sr. and Mary Agnes, his brother John Murphy, Sr. and sister, Sarah Murphy.
