Jury Assesses Life Term to McCandless, Verdict Returned After 90 Minutes {Excerpt} --
"A 55-year-old carpenter, James McCandless, Thursday night was given a life sentence by a jury for the alleged murder of the wife he met through a correspondence club. He was charged with allegedly drowning Geraldine McCandless, on July 29, 1966, by throwing her in a well at the James Chapel Church on the old Marshall-Leigh Road. According to McCandless's confession, admitted into testimony by Distric Judge Sam B. Hall, McCandless and his wife had corresponded for several months before marrying on October 2, 1962. They moved to Marshall in May of 1966 after living in Stephenville, Texas; Godley, Texas; Fallon, Nevada; Crossville, Tennessee; Cleburne, Texas; and New Boston, Texas. The jury of 10 men and two women deliberated about an hour and a half before returning the verdict of guilty. The Court-Appointed defense attorneys along with the client elected to have the jury assess the punishment rather than the judge. This is a choice which remains with the defendant. The jury went out at 4:36 p.m. to deliberate about punishment and returned the life sentence at 8 p.m."

Parole Board Release Man To Bexar County
