Charles Edwin "Ed" Nolen, Sr., born May 16, 1934, of Cartoogechaye Community, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Mission Hospital, Asheville, NC.

Born in Macon County, he was the son of the late Charles William Nolen and Glee Anne Garner Nolen of Franklin. He was preceded in death by a grandson, William Scott Nolen. Ed was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army in Germany. He was self-employed in the electrical field, was a charter member of the West Macon Fire Department and volunteer for over 20 years and an active member of First United Methodist Church. His many passions were square dancing, reading and working on the family farm. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joanne Baudendistel Nolen; three children, Chuck Nolen and his wife, Pam, of Franklin, Bill Nolen and his friend April of Franklin and Jenny Porter and her husband, David of Sylva; twin granddaughters, Samantha and Sydney Nolen of Franklin; two sisters, Connaree Nolen and Carolyn Lee Spence and husband, Hardy both of Greensboro; two brothers, Frank Nolen and wife Nancy of New Hope, VA and James Nolen and wife Freida of Marshville, NC.

The family will receive friends from 12:30-1:45 p.m., prior to the service at First United Methodist Church.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 4 at First United Methodist Church. Rev. David Beam and Rev. Steve Reeves will officiate.
