John Lewis "J.L." Shipp was the son of Andrew Jackson Shipp (who is buried at London Bridge Baptist Church Cemetery) and his wife, Bertha L. Newman. He was born in what was then Princess Anne County, Virginia (now city of Virginia Beach). He was married first to Marie V. Harris and second to Nellie Mae Swanner.
J.L.'s son, John Lewis Shipp, Jr, died during Operation Tiger in World War II.

John L. Shipp, 93, of the 1800 block of Pleasant Ridge Road, died Nov. 10, 1996, at his residence.
A native of Princess Anne County, Mr. Shipp was an active farmer until the age of 92. He was the widower of Nellie M. Shipp and a member of Church of Christ at Creeds.
Survivors include four daughters, Edith VanNostrand, Bertha Bartel, both of Virginia Beach, Joyce Turner of Norfolk and Doris Hale of Virginia Beach; three sons, William A. Shipp, Archie Shipp and Andy Shipp, all of Virginia Beach; two brothers, George Shipp and Robert Shipp, both of Parksley, Va.; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Charity United Methodist Church Cemetery, Virginia Beach, by Pastor John Boyer. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Church of Christ at Creeds, 5500 Morris Neck Road, Virginia Beach, Va. 23457. "
