Alfred J. "Al" Barshaw
March 20, 1926 - April 4, 2016

MARQUETTE - Alfred John "Al" Barshaw, age 90, of Marquette, entered eternal life Monday, April 4, 2016 at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans.

Born in Marquette on March 30, 1926, a son of Alfred R. and Maude M. (Macro) Barshaw. Al was raised in Marquette and graduated from the Graveraet High School in 1944. He entered the US Army on August 9, 1944, serving his country during World War II, fighting in the Battle of The Bulge. Following his honorable discharge, Al married the former Dorothea M. Hampel and together the couple established their home and began raising a family in Marquette. The Barshaw home was always filled with children, not only Al and Dot's, along with their many foster children. Al and Dot welcomed them all and balanced being parents, breadwinners, and homemakers, with the challenge of raising the kids entrusted to them. Throughout the years, Al was employed as a milkman, as a machine operator with Lake Shore Incorporated, as a janitor/bus driver with the Marquette Public Schools, as a furnace repairman/deliveryman with Raish Oil and finally as a custodian with the former Union National Bank from where he retired. Family gatherings were always a part of the Barshaw lifestyle and the FARM in Republic was the lightning rod for parties and family get-togethers throughout the years, even until today. Al liked to keep busy and enjoyed reading, hunting, walking, camping, and being at the farm with family and friends, but his biggest enjoyment was aggravating anyone he came in contact with. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Richard Jopling Post 44 of the American Legion, and the VFW.

Al is survived by his wife, Dorothea, who currently resides at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans; daughters, Lynn Bennett of Santa Barbara, CA and Susan Barshaw of Marquette; a son, Daniel Barshaw of Mora, MN; grandchildren, Christopher Bennett, Steven (Emily) Bennett, Wendy (Patrick) McLaughlin, Carrie Holm, and Katherine (Randy) Campbell, Marcus Barshaw and Aaron (Mike) Swanson; great-grandchildren, Zackery Bennett, Dallas McLaughlin, Delaney McLaughlin, Kaylee Campbell and Cody Campbell; and a sister-in-law, Catherine "Cassie" Barshaw of Marquette.

In addition to his parents, Al was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Lynn Mack Bennett; sisters and brothers-in-law, Cora and Harold Thompson, Pearl and Bob Beaudry, Shirley and Frank Biegler, Beverly and Sheldon Nord, and Joan and Wayne Trepanier; and brother, Raymond "Bill" Barshaw.

The family will receive relatives and friends at the Swanson-Lundquist Funeral Home on Saturday, July 9, beginning at 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 am Saturday. Rev. D. Michael Carriere will officiate. Veteran's honors will be provided by members of the Vietnam Veterans of America and American Legion. A reception will follow in the reception room located at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Activity Fund.
