Sherry will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 51 years, son, 3 Grandchildren, 2 Brothers and extended family including numerous brother/sister-in-laws and 19 nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents (Edward Earl "Sonny Boy" Smith and Sarah Bennett Smith) of Oak City, North Carolina, sister (Toi Sue Smith) of Oak City, North Carolina, and nephew (Bobby Gene Wynne, Jr) of Carolina Beach, North Carolina.
Sherry Butler was born Sherry Yvonne Smith in Hamilton, NC January 6th 1952 to parents Sonny Boy Smith and Sarah Bennett Smith. She graduated from Oak City High School Class of 1970 and attended Hardbarger Business School in Raleigh. In the Fall of 1970 (October 2) Sherry married her childhood sweetheart. Early in their marriage they served as foster parents and later had a son.
Sherry Butler will be remembered as a woman of tremendous faith and dedication to her community. In a lifetime marked by quiet kindness and grace, she dutifully served her Lord, family, and those in need. Sherry stood as a beacon of light and made safe harbor for the youth of Martin and Halifax Counties. Her ministry of faith included founding Oak City 4-H, being a leader in the youth outreach at Oak City Baptist Church, organizing faith-based Vacation Bible Schools for the Roanoke-Albemarle region and was a dedicated sports mother and social conscience for hundreds of young athletes. Sherry was recognized for her community outreach by the State of North Carolina and Governor Jim Hunt.
Sherry Butler had an exuberance and passion for her family marked by an enthusiastic laugh and twinkling blue eyes. She was an adventure loving grandmother of 3 grandboys and will be missed as a sister, wife, mother, grandmother and loyal friend by many including her friends at the Eastern North Carolina Shag Club and the Quilting Buddies.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, January 23, at Oak City Cemetery in Oak City, North Carolina.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital in Tarboro, North Carolina for their tremendous care, love, and reverence.
