Swedish nobleman. He was an army military officer and diplomat, member of the top Swedish government from 1822 to 1839. He is known as a premarital son of King Carl XIII in his relationship with famous (though unofficial) mistress Augusta von Fersen. He was Sweden's negotiator during the Congress of Vienna, where Sweden ceded Swedish Pomerania in exchange for hooking up with Norway in a personal-royal union that lasted till 1905. He participated in war operations in Finland, Pomerania, on the Norwegian border and in the Ahvaland Islands between Sweden and Finland. He made lieutenant colonel in the Kronoberg Regiment in 1808 and was commander of the Västgöta-Dal Regiment three years later, soon to become a major general. His diplomatic work included legation official in Constantinople (Istanbul) and significant action as Swedish envoy to St. Petersburg, Russia, where he started the 1812 Policy in which Russia promised to assist Sweden in acquiring Norway. He moved with Tsar Alexander I during the war against Emperor Napoleon I and represented Sweden at the peace Congresses of Châtillon and Vienna. Under King Carl XIV John he presided over the College of War. He served as chairman of the Board of Prisons and Work Institutions in Sweden, and from 1838 until his death was chairman of the Table Commission. A member of the Academy of Military Sciences already as early as 1807, from 1857 he was also governor of Drottningholm and Svartsjö palaces. He was married first to Ebba Augusta Sofia De Geer af Leufsta, with whom he had four daughters, and after her death to Lovisa Henrietta Renata Augusta von Schönburg-Wechselburg.
