Obituary for Helen Doneta Nelson
In Loving Memory of
Helen Doneta Nelson
1936-2022

Born on June 26, 1936, Helen went to be with our Lord January 4, 2022 at 85 years of age.

Helen was born to Daryl and Cleo DeVault in Sioux City, Iowa.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Dean Nelson.

Helen grew up in Richfield, Minnesota and attended school in Bloomington, Minnesota. After graduating high school in 1954, she and Dean were married and moved to California while Dean was in the Marines. Upon the end of Dean's service, they moved to Denton, Texas where she worked as an executive secretary to put Dean through school. They then settled and raised their family in Garland, Texas. She began volunteering for PTA when her daughters, Pam and Carol, started school. Her work with PTA continued all through their education years and continued at the district level even after they finished school. One of her proudest achievements was when she received the Extended Service Award from Garland ISD Council PTA. After several years of raising her daughters at home, she went back to work as a school secretary, which was her profession until she retired to become a stay-at-home grandma! Once she retired, she volunteered at Parkland Hospital and was active in the Epsilon Sigma Alpha service sorority. Helen was very active in her grandchildren's, Braden, Bryce, and Katelyn's lives. She did school pick up, practice drop off, attended soccer games, band concerts, and choir concerts. She enjoyed reading, sewing, traveling, playing the piano, shopping with her dear friends for antiques, playing bridge and most of all her grandchildren. As her health began to decline, she moved into assisted living at Appletree Court in Richardson where she continued enjoying crafts, bridge, painting, and visiting with family.

Helen is survived by her, daughter Pamela Pitcher and son-in-law Michael of Garland, daughter Carol Rood and son-in-law Douglas of Flower Mound, grandchildren Braden Pitcher and wife Sabrena of Wasilla, Alaska, Bryce Pitcher and girlfriend Gabriela Garcia of Austin, and Katelyn Rood of Flower Mound, brother Daryl DeVault and wife Vicki of Carrollton, and numerous extended family and friends.

Services will be conducted at Wildwood Chapel at Restland Cemetery, located at 13005 Greenville Ave in Dallas, TX. Visitation will be prior to the funeral services at 9:00 am at the chapel and the funeral service will follow at 10am.
